82. Bread of
Labour
Once, a saint with his
two disciples went to a village. The disciples asked the saint who would
provide food in the village. Just then, a carpenter named, Kalo, came and
invited them in his home. Kalo thought, ‘Let them take rest till he earns money
for their food.' Kalo went to a rich merchant's home. That day, the merchant
had organized a banquet for the whole villagers but Kalo didn't eat. In the
evening, Kalo returned home with flour and vegetables from his wage; his wife
started cooking. Meanwhile, the servants of the merchant were asked whether all
the villagers had eaten or not. Then they came to know that a saint and two
disciples were still ravenous and sleeping in Kalo's house. Then the servants
offered them meal but the saint also took Kalo's bread to make him feel happy.
But just as the saint took a piece of the merchant's bread, it started bleeding
from bread. When he took Kalo's bread, it started flowing milk. The astonished
merchant asked the reason. Then the saint replied, “It is the bread of labour.”
Saying so he enjoyed Kalo's meal.
