86. Humiliation
A lady in a gingham dress
and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, went to meet the
president of Harward university. But they were ignominiously snapped by the
secretary, who said, “A meeting of two hours is going on; you can't disturb him
during the meeting.” They both kept waiting for 2 hours. After sometime the
president came and asked their purpose. The man said, “We are parents of that
accomplished child who died one year ago. So we want to erect a memorial in his
memory.” The president denied to give them place in the university. But the
lady said, “Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don't we just start
our own?” The president's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and
Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and went to California where they established the
University that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that
Harvard no longer cared about.
