114. A
Father and his Four Sons
There was a man
who had four sons. He wanted his son to teach not to judge things too quickly,
so he sent them to look for a pear tree. The first son went in winter, the
second in spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in autumn. When
they returned, he asked to describe what they had seen. The first son said that
the tree was ugly, bent and twisted. The second said it was covered with green
buds. The third son disagreed; he said it was the most beautiful thing, laden
with blossoms that smelled so sweet. The last son disagreed and said it was
ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfilment. Then the man told,
“You saw the same tree but in different seasons. So you cannot judge a tree, or
a person, by only one season. The essence of pleasure, joy and love can only be
measured in the end, when all the seasons are up."
