115. The
Clever Fox
Once, there was an
old lion. He was unable to kill any creature. So, he said to himself, “I must
do something to remove my hunger; else I would die of starvation.” He kept
thinking. At last an idea came in his mind. He decided to lie down in the cave
pretending to be ill. Then any animal would came to enquire, would become his
prey. The lion put his wicked plan into practice which started working. Many of
his well-wishers got killed. But evil is short-lived. One day, a fox visited
the ailing lion. As foxes are clever by nature, the fox stood at the mouth of
the cave. His sixth sense worked and he knew the reality. So, he asked about
the lion's health from outside. The lion replied, “I am not feeling well. But
why don't you come inside?” Then the fox replied, “I would love to come in,
sir! But on seeing, all the foot-prints going to your cave and none coming out,
I would be foolish enough to come in.” Saying so, the fox went away to alert
the other animals.
