108. The
Conceited Disciple
An archer at a
young age became proficient in archery. That made him so much conceited. He
showed no gratitude towards his guru. One day, his guru asked him to accompany
him to a mountainous place in quest of truth. In the midst of their journey
they found a deep gulf which was difficult to pass through. There was a single,
thin log which spanned the gulf. The guru reaching the middle of the log took
his arrow out and shot it into a tree. Then his other shot cleaved the first
arrow. Afterwards, he said to his young archer to do the same thing. But the
boy could not do so as instructed by his guru. As a result, he could manage to
stand on the thin log. He started trembling and asked for his guru's help. The
guru saved his life and made him realize the importance of humility.
Moral:
Don't be conceited after having power.
