116. The
Proud Lamp
Once a farmer
bought a new lamp from the nearby market. When he reached home, it was dark.
So, he filled the lamp with oil and putting a wick into it lighted it. It began
to shine with a clear steady light. The lamp felt proud of itself and on its
clear light. It started boasting that its light was brighter than that of the
sun even. Suddenly a strong puff of wind came and blew it out. The lamp felt
very small and realized its folly. It never knew that it could not face the
wind at all. The farmer lighted the lamp once again. Now the lamp kept shining
calmly showing no pride and making no boasts. The farmer said to the lamp, “Keep
shining gently. Don't compare yourself to the sun. He never goes out, nor
requires to be re-lighted like you."
