101. The
Sweet Lover-boy and Father
Once there was a
boy who loved sweets very much. He demanded all the time with his poor father,
who could not always afford sweets for his son. Therefore, father decided to
take his son to a saint who lived near by and asked him to dissuade his son
from asking sweets. The father with his son went to the saint and said, “O
great saint, could you ask my son to stop asking for sweets which I cannot
afford?” The great man was in difficulty; he told the man to bring his son back
after one month. The boy and his father returned to the saint after a month.
The saint asked the boy to stop asking sweets since his father couldn't afford
them. From then onwards, the boy stopped asking for sweets. The boy's father
asked the saint, “Why did you not ask my son to stop asking for sweets a month
ago?” The saint replied, “How could I ask a boy to give up sweets when I also
loved sweets myself?”
