132. The
Starfish
Once a boy saw an
old man in the distance while walking down in a deserted Mexican beach at
sunset. As he drew nearer, he noticed that his local native kept leaning down,
picking something and . throwing into the sea. As the boy came closer to him,
he became puzzled to see that the local native was throwing the starfish back
into the sea which had washed up on the beach. Then the boy asked the man
reason for doing this. The man replied that they had been washed up on the
beach. If he didn't throw them into the sea, they would die from lack of
oxygen. The boy said again, “But there must be a thousand of starfish which
have been washed up on the shore. You can't possibly get to all of them. You
can't possibly make a difference.” The local native smiled, bent down and
picked up yet another starfish. As he threw it back into the sea, he replied,
“I can make a difference to that one!"
