Introduction
Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan, underwent severe austerities to marry Lord Shiva. She gave up her royal comforts and lived in the forest, surviving on leaves, and worshipped a mud Shivalinga with deep devotion.
The Encounter with the Hunters
One day, a group of hunters passed by and saw Parvati. They asked if they could offer prayers and offerings to the Shivalinga. Parvati gladly allowed them to do so, but when the leader of the hunters began to offer meat, she stopped him, reminding him that only milk and bel leaves were the correct offerings.
The Lesson
The hunter explained that as hunters, they could only offer the meat they had hunted. Parvati refused, but the hunter insisted, saying if Lord Shiva did not accept it, they would leave. Reluctantly, Parvati allowed him to proceed.
Lord Shiva’s Acceptance
To Parvati’s surprise, Lord Shiva accepted the offering of meat. The hunter had been Lord Shiva himself in disguise, teaching Parvati that the sincerity of devotion matters more than the rituals. Pure devotion can transcend rituals and even turn offerings into something pure.
