The Boatman and Shri Ram
A humble boatman compares his work to Lord Shri Ram’s higher purpose of ferrying people from ignorance to enlightenment.
Introduction
One day, while Shri Ram, Sita, and Lakshman were traveling to the forest for their exile, they came across the river Ganga. A boatman offered to ferry them across the river. Upon reaching the other side, Shri Ram asked the boatman what he should give him for the service.
The Boatman's Answer
The boatman, feeling humble, replied, "My Lord, just like two doctors or two barbers do not charge each other for their services, since both of us are boatmen, I cannot charge you for this boat ride."
Shri Ram’s Curiosity
Shri Ram was surprised and asked, "That you are a boatman is true, but how is it that I am a boatman?"
