124. The
Travelers and the Tree
Once two travelers
were on their way on a scorching summer day. Since it was a sweltering sunny
day, they felt too exhausted to proceed any more. So they decided to take a
rest. They saw a large tree nearby. Reclining under the tree, a traveler
contemptuously condemned the tree for not having any fruits and nuts which
could be eaten. Even its wood was useless. Then in a curt voice the tree
replied, “You shouldn't be ungrateful to me; it's my thick branches in which
you both are shielded from the burning rays of the sun at this moment."
They felt ashamed of their words and took an oath not to belittle any creation
of God.
Moral:
All the creations of the world have a good purpose. We should venerate and
understand their values.
